The Environment Education Centre The Centre at Penwortham is one of a network of environmental education centres at National Grid substations throughout England and Wales, and is run in partnership with the Wildlife Trust (Lancashire Manchester and North Merseyside). The centre is dedicated to environmental and heritage education and staffed by a team of professional environmental educators. We provide a stimulating learning environment with a well-equipped classroom, a performance area, a large art workshop and a number of smaller rooms for meetings etc. There is a reference library of environmental resources including environmental publications for you to peruse and photocopy, which can be visited anytime. In addition, our staff are always happy to advise on school grounds and other environmental work. Our grounds cover 10 hectares and include a wildlife garden, a variety of ponds, two broad-leaved woodlands, mature hedgerows and a wildflower meadow. There is an all-access trail around the site, leading to the ponds, gazebo and orchard. The grounds also have special features for visitors with special needs. In Magic Wood where the Viking programme takes place we have constructed a Longhouse. Most of our other programmes use Touch Wood, the meadow, the playground and the centre buildings.
